Review - Real Heroes Cry by Kieran Gould-Dowen

I was very kindly provided with a copy of the book by the author

Well I just this minute finished the last page and I am eager to tell you about this book!

Real Heroes Cry, where do I start?, it is a fast paced book, if you start reading it make sure you put out the do not disturb sign and lock the door.

There is a lot going on in this book, so please bear with me, first of all it's set in England, in Hereford to be exact, it is actually nice to read a book set in the UK after reading so many American based books.

At the beginning of the book we meet Dominic and his brother Elliot, not the closest of brothers they despise each other.  We also meet Zara, Dom's best friend, who Dom has very strong feelings for.

Their peace is shattered one night by a meteor crashing from the sky, unfortunately for our brothers and Zara they are right beside it when it happens, Elliot sees a chance to get rid of his brother and pushes him to his death in the crater and flees, Dom doesn't die but he is different thanks to a crystal embedded in his body, he starts to discover he can do some amazing things!

He discovers his brother also has a crystal which has turned him in to a total villain with horrible strange powers and after a horrific incident at home Dom goes on the run, hiding away with Zara, now this is where Kieran's amazing imagination really kicks in with Dom's own powers creating houses out of thin air, completely furnished houses, as well as that he can fly and so much more!

Dom and Zara discover that its not just Elliot they need to be hiding from, they are also being hunted by the GEU who want to test and kill the likes of Dom, he is also discovers his kind have a name "Ghosts" and he is not the only one.

This books continues with Dom and Zara encountering more "Ghosts", they discover both friend and foe, they also find out that some of the people like Dom are using their powers for bad.  Dom becomes almost an unofficial leader of the group of friends he meets along the way and between them they discover the heartache of having these powers.

As the book continues the "Ghosts" and the GEU collide, lives are lost and many tears are shed, some happiness is to be had and we get some nice romantic scenes with Dom and Zara.  But no more spoilers from me - read it!!

This book as I mentioned is fast paced, it hits all the emotions, I experienced hate - at Elliot, sadness - when a little girl Sandy died, joy - when somebody wasn't dead after all (see no spoiler from me!!), amazement - the whole purgatory underwater and anger - at Elliot again!

I was not 100% sure of the character of Dom, all the characters both main and supporting are well written and have their own personalities but Dom could be a little annoying for me but he is still young, despite all these powers he maybe still has a little bit of growing up to do.

The book has a heart breaking final few chapters and it also has a cliff hanger- aaaaaaargh!!! But that is good it means there will be another book (book 2 is coming I have it on good authority).  I did enjoy this book and I look forward to seeing what happens in the follow up.

Real Heroes Cry is awarded 4 out of 5
