THE LIFE CYCLE OF THE RAIN

We all remember learning about the water cycle at school don’t we? How the sun heats the water, and the water evaporates and… blah blah blah. The Water Cycle was never a topic that set our school books on fire BUT maybe if Ruby Morris had paid more attention to her Geography teacher then she’d know exactly which clouds might kill her! So we’re here to educate you, because don’t forget, just one drop will kill you. From the writing process to publication, join us for a blog tour with a difference, as we learn about a FAR more interesting cycle – The Life Cycle of The Rain by Virginia Bergin.

The Rain: A Downpour of Marketing and Publicity Support

The good news about publishing a book called The Rain in the UK is that inevitably, it is ALWAYS raining. This is pretty much the best marketing you can ask for – thematic weather around the publication date of your book. Campaign DONE. I must be the only person keeping my fingers crossed for a rainy July.

Of course, the campaign doesn’t really stop at keeping our fingers crossed that the gods of weather will make it tip down for a week in July; hopefully there is a little bit more to marketing and PR than that (!). When The Rain landed on my desk, the first thing I did was to start thinking: who is this book for? Who is going to love it? How do we talk to them about it? Where are they?!

The Rain is unquestioningly a book for young adults, and lovers of young adult fiction. So we knew that the marketing and PR for this book would sit primarily on digital platforms that are popular with teenagers, because – let’s face it - most teens are glued to their smartphones and social media. It’s basically all they do ALL DAY LONG. 

Without going into too much boring detail, we created assets that teens couldn’t miss – brilliant posts on our teen website community www.mykindabook.com, this brilliant blog tour, a trailer that makes your heart jump out of your chest.



So… what next? What’s the only other thing that teenagers do in the summer, when they can bear to abandon their devices and go outside? They don their wellies, floral crowns and denim hotpants and hit the festival circuit. With The Rain publishing on the same day as Latitude Festival starts, and our very own Pan Mac crew in full attendance at Latitude in the Book Tent, I knew this could be a great way to engage teenagers.

We created bespoke The Rain PONCHOS to send off with the Pan Mac crew, and a competition to win the ‘ultimate festival survival kit’, including some amazing The Rain Converse created by Canvas Warriors. I can’t think of a better way to get teenagers excited about a new book, and engage with it a way they can relate to.

On the publicity side, it was all about getting The Rain in the hands of reviewers and YA supporters. The Rain is a debut novel, which means it needs all the advance love it can get. Book proofs were sent out a few months before publication, along with the book being available on NetGalley, and soon the rave reviews were flying in. Just what a publicist wants!

Finding a hook really helps, and when Virginia’s agent described the book it as ‘Georgia Nicolson meets the apocalypse’ we knew that was the perfect way to explain this incredibly dark yet toe-curlingly funny read. 

Having a great author doesn’t hurt either, and Virginia’s enthusiasm and passion for the project has helped enormously with getting the word about The Rain out there. It’s also a great publicity extra to have a UKYA author, and a book set on home turf – the idea of The Rain being set local to Totnes, for example, gives a whole new regional excitement to the book. My concluding thought: READ THE RAIN! At the heart of marketing and PR is persuading people that they want to read the book you’re working on – so, read it, read it, read it. It is really, really BRILLIANT.
