After global warming and a second civil war devastated the former United States, two different societies rose from the ashes – the Union, a towering high-tech utopia, hugging the perimeter of the continent, and the devastated, untamed midsection known as the Ruins.
Seventeen-year-old Evan Taylor has an easy, privileged life in the Union. What she doesn’t have is any idea what to do with the rest of her life. She only knows she wants to do something meaningful, to make a difference in the lives of others.
When she’s kidnapped and taken into the Ruins as a pawn in a dispute involving her boyfriend, Bryce, her ideal world is turned upside down. What she learns while in the Ruins shakes her faith in everything she’s ever known, from Bryce, to her family, and even the Union itself.
Now Evan must choose whether to stay with Cyrus, the sexy, resourceful survivor who believes she’s in the Ruins for a reason, or return to the only life she’s ever known. But when she stumbles upon a dangerous plot that threatens both worlds, her decision could tear her apart.
Most of the dystopian novels I have read of late have been full on end of the world, nothing left reads, The Union is different, set in a future United States, a second civil war has destroyed the country leaving it with two very different societies.
The Union of the title is a hi-tech Utopia full of gorgeous people and shiny gadgets, it hugs the coasts of the States, in the centre of the country are The Ruins the remains of the old country, destroyed and allegedly deserted.
Evan is a teen living in The Union, she has had a very privileged upbringing but she wants to leave her family home and try and find out what she wants to do with the rest of her life, her best friends have their lives planned out but she doesn't have a clue so when her friends make their way out of town she jumps at the opportunity to go with them.
On route to the other areas of The Union, Evan comes across her school friend Bryce, did I mention he was gorgeous?, no?! Well he is, a suitable amount of flirtatious behaviour goes on but something doesn't ring true about him especially after meeting his friend Jack who calls Bryce by a different name. A distant alarm bell rings in Evan's head.
But before she can find out what he is up too, she is taken, kidnapped and when she wakes up she finds she is not in The Union anymore she is in The Ruins, a place where nobody is supposed to live but seems to be full of Union supplies and people out to make trouble for The Union. Her kidnappers definitely seem to have an agenda but thankfully she manages to escape but that is not the end of her ordeal.
Following her escape she finds herself near death's door but thankfully she is rescued by a group of young people and it is then that her life is turned upside down. She goes from a pampered teen to a hardworking survivor living of the land and she meets Cyrus, who makes her previous love interest Bryce fade from her memory, she begins to look at her life differently, does she want to go back to her old life?
When a threat to not only her but to The Union arises she has to make a choice whether to stay with Cyrus who she is falling hard for or should she go back to her old life to warn them that trouble is brewing in the Ruins.
The Union is a great new look at the young adult dystopian genre, it has a spirited female lead and some nice eye candy but it also has a thrilling plot which takes you from the shiny clean Union to the deserted Ruins. It ends with Evan making her decision and leaves the door open for book 2.

When not visiting the imaginary worlds inside my head, I live in San Diego, California, with one husband, three children, two cats, and one dog. In addition to my day job as a technical writer and editor, I write young adult fiction. I love the intensity of teen emotions and the way they're still figuring out life.
When I'm not writing, you can find me with my nose in a book, hanging out with family and friends, hiking, or knitting. I'm obsessed with Facebook, young adult novels, bad lip reading videos, pumpkin spice lattes, microbrewed beers, and the San Diego Chargers.
