BLOG TOUR - Death of an Avid Reader by Frances Brody

Thank you to Piatkus for providing me with an advance copy in exchange for an honest review

So first of all my confession out of the way, this is my first Kate Shackleton Mystery novel, how I have missed the others I do not know but I will blame my children, they are my go to excuse and terrible at getting in the way of my reading (bless their dirty socks).

Anyhoo I love a good mystery from my all time classic favourite Agatha Christie's Miss Marple to my hi-tech fave Eve Dallas in J.D. Robb's In Death series.  These stories never fail to entertain me but muscling in to my favourites list is this newcomer in the shape of Kate Shackleton and her very enjoyable tale set in the 1920's.

I must first of all draw your attention to the cover, I love it, when the review opportunity arose it was this cover that drew me in, it kind of reminds me of the railway posters of this era which had beautiful eye catching designs.

This is the sixth book in the Kate Shackleton Mysteries series, it starts of with Kate being called to London by the venerable Lady Coulton.  She wishes for Kate to track down her daughter who was born out of wedlock and was given up many years before, her husband is ill and she feels now is the time to track down her daughter.

Kate very ably takes up the case, once more assisted by Sykes the former policeman but as she delves deeper in to the past and searches for Lady Coulton's daughter she discovers more than anticipated and a lot closer to home.

A respected scholar Horatio Potter is found dead in the basement of her local library, delving deeper in to his murder she finds that these two cases could be linked, could an innocent man be found guilty of this horrible crime and is Lady Coulton's daughter a link in this poor man's murder?

Well Kate investigates with such amazing stamina, she is a woman who never gives up and considering the setting where a woman's place was usually at home she does not let anything get in her way including a stowaway in her car in the shape of a Capuchin monkey.

The story is seamless, it flows beautifully and the setting mainly in Leeds is just perfect, I truly loved Death of an Avid Reader, you could almost smell the books in the library scenes and feel the chill air from the misty evenings plus it did keep me guessing right up to the end when the killer is revealed and of course does Kate find Lady Coulton's daughter?

As much as I love a modern crime book, I love a book set in the early part of the last century which shows us that before the invention of the Internet and looking up your iphone, things can be solved with true determination and brain power!

Death of an Avid Reader is awarded 5 out of 5

BLOG TOUR - Zenith by Dirk Strasser

Welcome to my Blog Tour stop for Zenith by Dirk Strasser

Read an excerpt below!

Can you see the story breathing?

Imagine

A mountain so great it takes a year to travel from base to summit

A sun so powerful it drives you into madness if you look at it

An ascent so vital it determines the fate of the world

A summit so precious it holds the key to the divine

The world of the great Mountain is unstable. Giant pillars erupt from the surface and yawning chasms form unpredictably underfoot. Since the Maelir first stood on its slopes in the distant past, they have sought to still its anger and control its power. Each year, twin brothers are chosen to make a perilous journey to the summit. If they survive they will be witness to Zenith, and the secrets will be revealed to them.

When Atreu and Teyth embark on their Ascent, their Talismans lead them onto conflicting paths that will ultimately set brother against brother. And this time the Ascent itself is in peril as unknown forces that have long craved the power of Zenith will stop at nothing to make it their own even if it means destroying the very thing that sustains all life the Mountain itself.

EXCERPT

He looked up. Something with massive flat wings hovered just above his head. It was dark against the dark sky. Its claws reached out for him and Atreu covered his eyes. There was a sound of footfalls behind him.
‘Come on!’ The call was urgent.
Atreu uncovered his eyes to look at the thing above him. The snow swirled and eddied around it. There were no claws; they were arms reaching out for him, imploring him to grab hold.
The footsteps were almost upon him when he lunged at the arms and held tight. He felt an immediate rush of air as he was lifted upwards. A windrider! He tried to look up at the man who was holding him. His jaw was grimly set in place, and he was looking past Atreu’s head at the ground below.
Just then an arrow whistled through the air.
‘We’re not safe yet,’ said the windrider. ‘With you weighing me down, it’s hard to fly high enough to get out of reach of the arrows.’
‘What’s happened?’
‘The Faemir. We had some warning, but it wasn’t enough. The Felsen don’t have a chance. They won’t leave their monastery.’
Atreu watched another arrow fly past his face. It embedded itself in one of the windrider’s wings. There was a sudden jolt.
‘Are you all right?’ Atreu’s voice sounded thin even to his own ears. He tried to look down and immediately felt giddy.
The windrider grunted a reply.
Atreu glanced up at the arrow stuck in the left wing. ‘Are you in pain?’
The windrider almost laughed. ‘What do you think I am – a bird? Of course I’m not in pain, but a few more arrows and we’ll both drop out of the sky.’ He shifted slightly and Atreu could feel the wind rushing past his ears. ‘Here, hold onto this – my arms are getting tired.’
The sun started to appear from behind the cliffs, and the snowfall was not quite as heavy. Atreu forced himself to look down. The giddiness returned but he fought it, and soon the ground below stopped swirling.
He could see the dull glint of swords, knives and axes against the white carpet of snow. The lights of Crosanct were fading now that the sun had begun to rise. There were soldiers and Faemir clashing everywhere, though from Atreu’s height they were often indistinguishable. Other windriders swooped and dipped through the air below them.
‘Even when I get you through the Pass, you’ll have to be careful,’ said the windrider.
Atreu nodded slowly, still looking down.
‘Did you hear me?’ asked the windrider.
Yes,’ said Atreu. Now that the fear had receded, a wave of euphoria swept through him. I’m flying!

Could he be the ripper they’ve been searching for? Convinced the only way to get back home is to solve the murders, Mark dives headfirst into uncovering the truth.

When I was younger I watched a tv series, Jack the Ripper with Michael Caine (yes you are doing his accent aren't you!?) I was gripped, the dirty and quite frankly eerie streets of Whitechapel in London along with the scary true story of this monster was gripping viewing for my teenage self.

So when the chance to review Shadows Fall Away came up I very excitedly signed up, the story of a young man out of time makes for a really good read.

This is going to be a quick review as books like this need to be read and experienced first hand, I always feel I can never do them justice in tell you about them but the story is about Mark an American teen sent to live with his Ripper obsessed Aunt Agatha in London.

Literally struck by lightening, he wakes up to discover he isn't where he started off, in fact he isn't even in the same year or century for that matter!

He has been taken back to Victorian times, the London of Jack the Ripper's reign, finding himself meeting a relative and becoming the source of suspicion as he knows so much about the Ripper murders, Mark has no option but to try and get on with his new life in London and try and get to the bottom of the murders but he is also distracted by Genie Trembly a young girl who is the total opposite of him, he finds himself becoming extremely interested in her but so does Jack!

Will Mark be able to save her, will he be able to get home? Well I'm not telling you'll have to read this gripping tale for yourself!

Excellent young adult thriller - awarded 4 out of 5

REVIEW - Doctor Who: The Shakespeare Notebooks

Thank you to Ebury Publishing for providing me with a copy in exchange for an honest review

I love my sci-fi and I really love my Doctor Who, ever since Christopher Ecclestone's spectacular re-boot, I've been hooked though when I was a youngster back in the 80's I remember hiding from the cybermen way back then!

So if you are an avid Whovian you may have seen the episode that the Doctor and Shakespeare met up at the Globe Theatre, well this book proves that not only did they meet but the Doctor has a huge influence on his writing!

This book visits many of Shakespeares works and they are reimagined with the different Doctor's and their companions being placed in to all of Shakespeare's famous works.

It really is a bit of fun, but unless you have a great interest in both Doctor Who and Shakespeare it may fall a little flat for you as all of the Doctor references will just go right over your head.

It is a great idea, one for the die hards I think but still its a fun read with great illustrations of our man from Gallifrey.

REVIEW - Andromeda by Amy Bartelloni

Andromeda is set in the near figure, ten years after a pandemic has worked its way through the population, leaving millions dead and millions infected with an incurable disease.

The story is told from two groups POV's, the first group is Jade and Sera(phina) two teenagers who have had to leave the relative security of their camp following an attack, they are making their way on foot slowly to Albany in New York, the alleged location of a safe refuge where the survivors of this global catastrophe can live safely.

The second group is made up of Anyon and Malachi, these two young men are trying to find Sera and Jade, Anyon had been assigned to protect her and in doing this he and Jade have grown extremely close, he has been trained as a soldier and his past which involves Sera is clouded in mystery.

Both groups struggle on foot to Albany, the road is dangerous, not to mention long, wild animals and lone survivors are just some of their worries, the constant fear of infection is always in the back of their minds.

Reaching Albany first, the girls hopes are dashed when the camp is not how they imagined (not spoiling for you!) but they do find hope in the shape of an older lady who has been living in the city, she has supplies and she also has a young man staying with her, Lazarus.

Lazarus puts Jade's back up straight away but after the discovery that their best option is to continue heading north they take his offer of help and they leave the lady behind and make their way out of the city.

Finally reaching Albany, Anyon and Malachi discover the camp and they also discover that the girls have passed through, seeking refuge with the lady, she tells them about the danger that they are in as Lazarus is not all that he seems (no spoilers again!) she urges them to find the girls before it is too late.

So what is Lazarus up too, well I can say this, the government are desperate to find our four travellers, they will stop at nothing to get them but what will happen to them when they are finally snared by them.

Sera is the main prize, her parents are scientists who had been working on an antidote to the virus but she has not seen them for a long time and her memory is very patchy as to what happened when she was younger, against all odds they need to avoid being captured, but will they?

Andromeda is a fast paced exciting tale, I love a nice gripping tale like this, when I read the synopsis and saw pandemic, I was kinda expecting zombies but there are none, just extremely ill people in various stages of illness, desperate to live.

Our four young characters are very believable it's been several years since I was a teenager but all the emotional angst that a teenager goes through was there.

Whether you like your Dystopia full of zombies or bombs, you will enjoy this and just now its FREE on Kindle so you have no excuse, give it a read!

  Stay With Me Cover

STAY WITH ME TRAILER: EXCERPT: As I lay there, trying to swallow a loud, obnoxious yawn, I remembered something he’d said when we first met, about life being too short. I imagined he had firsthand experience with shortened lives while he was serving. That mentality came from experience. I got that now. Could even understand it, but there was something I didn’t understand. “Why?” I asked. There was a beat. “Why what?” Jax sounded tired, and I should shut up or point out that I was now tired and could sleep, so he could leave. But I didn’t. “Why are you here? You don’t know me and . . .” I trailed off, because there really wasn’t anything left to say. A minute went by, and he hadn’t answered my question, and then I think another minute ticked on, and I was okay with him not answering because maybe he didn’t even know. Or maybe he was just bored and that was why he was here. But then he moved. Jax pressed against my back, and the next breath I took got stuck in my throat. My eyes shot open. The sheet and blanket were between us, but they felt like nothing. “What are you doing?” I asked. “Getting comfortable.” He dropped an arm over my waist, and my entire body jerked against his. “It’s time to sleep I think.” “But—” “You can’t sleep when you talk,” he remarked. “You don’t need to be all up on me,” I pointed out. His answering chuckle stirred the hair along the back of my neck. “Honey, I’m not all up on you.” I freaking begged to differ on that point. I started to wiggle away, but the arm around my waist tightened, holding me in place. “You’re not going anywhere,” he announced casually, as if he wasn’t holding me prisoner in the bed. Okay. The whole prisoner thing might be melodramatic, but he wasn’t letting me up. Not when he was getting all kinds of comfy behind me. Oh my God, this was spooning. Total spooning. I was spooning with an honorary member of the Hot Guy Brigade. Did I wake up in a parallel universe? “Sleep,” he demanded, as if the one word carried that much power. “Go to sleep, Calla.” This time his voice was softer, quieter. “Yeah, it doesn’t work that way, Jax. You have a nice voice, but it doesn’t hold the power to make me sleep on your command.” He chuckled. I rolled my eyes, but the most ridiculous thing ever was the fact that after a couple of minutes, my eyes stayed shut. I . . . I actually settled in against him. With his front pressed to my back, his long legs cradling mine, and his arm snug around my waist, I actually did feel safe. More than that, I felt something else—something I hadn’t felt in years. I felt cared for . . . cherished. Which was the epitome of dumb, because I barely knew him, but feeling that, recognizing what the warm, buzzing feeling was, I fell right asleep.

Fever (Songbird #1) recently got an EPILOGUE
Check it out below!

FEVER EPILOGUE:
~SPOILER ALERT if you haven’t read Fever~ ELLA
The shower was hot and divine, the droplets hitting my skin made me want to melt. I was exhausted down to my very core. Gutting the old to make room for the new was hard work. Every muscle in my body ached, but I was so ridiculously happy it didn’t even matter. A smile crept over my lips as I reached for the shampoo, squirting a healthy amount into my palm. I had callouses on my hands and my knuckles were indented with various nicks and scrapes. They stung a little as I rubbed the shampoo into my hair, but nothing could wipe the grin from my face.
A song filtered up my throat as I spun to wash out the shampoo. I went for Frank’s Fly Me To The Moon, belting out the song as my mind wandered towards the man I wanted to kiss. Lathering up my loofah, I scrubbed it up my arms, washing off the grime from another hard day’s work.
“Please don’t tell me that loofah is stealing my job again.” Cole’s deep voice made me giggle.
“It’ll go into early retirement the second you get into this shower.” I kept humming as I listened to him undress, my body already zinging in anticipation. It didn’t help that Cole had joined in the song and was now singing about how I filled his heart with song. I tipped my head back and sighed, still reeling in the awesomeness that my life had become.
After Cole’s grand entrance back into it, he’d given me a weekend of heaven before flying back to Chicago. I’d then had to wait until after we’d both finished out our school year. I didn’t want to fly over for his graduation, knowing David would be around. I couldn’t rub his face in it. I just couldn’t. I was so incredibly happy with Cole; it was impossible not to show it.
June 18th had been the happiest of my life. Cole had flown across the country, I’d flown down and we’d run into each other’s arms at LAX.
“Hmmm.” Cole’s large hands ran around my body as he pressed his naked torso against my back. Ripping the loofah from my hands, he chucked it out of the shower and took over, running his soapy fingers over each and every one of my curves.
A soft moan formed in my throat, whispering out of my lips as I rested my head against his shoulder and wrapped my hand around the back of his neck.
He rested his chin on my head.
“So I just got a call from the architect.” His voice was liquid soft and sexy, in spite of the fact he was talking business. I would have ignored it if he hadn’t said the words I’d been desperate to hear all day.
My eyes popped open and I spun in his arms. “What’d he say?”
Cole grinned down at me, his eyes buzzing with the same excitement I felt. “He’ll be here at nine tomorrow to show us his initial ideas.”
I let out a squeal. Cole laughed at me, capturing my lips. I went on my tiptoes and ran my fingers into his hair, loving the way his body responded to my touch.
We’d basically spent the second half of June holed up in my room...much to my aunt’s disgust. I hadn’t cared. I was with Cole and we'd had major catching up to do, but as July rolled around we knew it was time to get on with it, so we’d excitedly contacted a few real estate agents and the hunt had begun. I still had five months until I was granted full access to
my trust fund, but Cole’s was plenty healthy and was able to get us started. We’d already received pre-approval from the bank and it was just a matter of finding the perfect place.
Three weeks later, we did. It was an old store with a studio apartment on top. It’d been abandoned years ago, but the rights for sale had not been available until the owner passed away. For us, the timing couldn’t have been better. After being handed the keys, we stood on the sidewalk in giddy silence gazing up at what would soon become Reynold’s.
We were both getting a taste of our dreams. I was living back in a place that felt like home. Our little apartment was just under five miles from Pasadena Community College. I was cutting back to part-time classes and would complete my degree over four more years. I wanted to be able to help Cole with the pub. I would have quit college then and there, but Nina had talked me out of it, convincing me that I could handle both.
“It’ll be busy, but you’ll never regret having a college degree,” she’d said. “You guys are gonna be great. I’m so proud of you.” Her eyes had welled with tears as we talked over Skype, making me want to cry.
I still couldn’t believe Cole had left Chicago...and them...for me. But he told me as long as I was there, he could live anywhere.
“Ella, you’re my home and no matter where you go, I’ll follow you. I’d walk a thousand miles, remember?” He'd leaned his forehead against mine and I'd nearly died, but then he'd taken it one step further, his expression softening to mush. “I want to marry you.”
My lips parted, my heart freezing still.
He’d grinned at me. “I don’t have a ring yet. Every penny I have is kind of wrapped up in our future plans right now, but there’ll be one coming, Miss Simmons...I just wanted you to know.”
I'm pretty sure I haven't stopped smiling since that day. We might not be officially engaged, but our hearts got hitched a long time ago and for now I’m happy to wait for my wedding day.
Cole’s tongue was burning as it slid into my mouth. He pressed me back against the cool tiles, his lips working over my chin and down my neck. I ran my fingers across his hard shoulders as his tongue traveled down my body, hotwiring my brain and making coherent thought impossible.
“How much time do I have?” Cole murmured against my belly. “Time? What’s time?”
He chuckled, blowing a raspberry into my belly button. I gently yanked his hair as I giggled.
“Jody’s picking me up at seven.”
“And where are you going?”
“We’re taking Morgan out for karaoke.”
“Again?” He looked up at me. “She’s not looking for that guy is she?”
“The actor?” I chuckled. “No, she just needs some cheering up. She still hasn’t found a
job and since her big break up with Brad she's been working her way through a very lousy dating pool."
"I thought she was swearing off guys."
I shrugged, my insides pinching with worry. "Me too."
Cole's expression mirrored my disquiet, but I forced a smile, not wanting to take my
concerns into the evening.
"Anyway, we have to celebrate as much as we can tonight. Jody leaves next week. It’s
gonna be sad. We have to have as much fun as we can while the trio is still together.” I tipped my head, water running off my hair and splashing into his face. I laughed, brushing his slick curls off his forehead. “I’m so glad I’ve got you.”
Cole ran his hands up my sides, squeezing my hips and giving me one of his megawatt smiles. I leaned down and kissed it, pressing my body against his. “So in answer to your question...” I softly bit his neck before working my way up to his ear and nibbling on the lobe. “I’ve got as much time as we need.”
Cole’s deep chuckle reverberated in his chest. “When it comes to you, my love, there is never enough time.”
I grinned as his lips got back to work and I was sent to heaven, the tune of Cheek to Cheek whistling through my brain as Cole and I danced to our own shower song.

BOOK BLITZ - Take Me On by Katie McGarry **GIVEAWAY**

Release Date: 05/27/14
Harlequin Teen

Summary from Goodreads:
Acclaimed author Katie McGarry returns with the knockout new story of two high school seniors who are about to learn what winning really means.

Champion kickboxer Haley swore she'd never set foot in the ring again after one tragic night. But then the guy she can't stop thinking about accepts a mixed martial arts fight in her honor. Suddenly, Haley has to train West Young. All attitude, West is everything Haley promised herself she'd stay away from. Yet he won't last five seconds in the ring without her help.

West is keeping a big secret from Haley. About who he really is. But helping her-fighting for her-is a shot at redemption. Especially since it's his fault his family is falling apart. He can't change the past, but maybe he can change Haley's future.

Hayley and West have agreed to keep their relationship strictly in the ring. But as an unexpected bond forms between them and attraction mocks their best intentions, they'll face their darkest fears and discover love is worth fighting for.

Bonus novella included: Crossing the Line.

Excerpt from West’s Point of View
Okay. All right. This can be managed. It can. I can manage this,” says Haley. “This is entirely under my control. I can own this situation.”
I don’t need to be managed.”
Haley tosses me an are-you-for-real gaze and her hair tumbles over her shoulder. It’s shiny and I bet if I ran my fingers through it, the strands would feel like silk. I like hair like that. I like kissing girls who have hair like that. My eyes flash to her lips and the memory of her stepping into me on Friday night sizzles in my mind: the walking, talking inferno. Kissing Haley would be a thrill ride experience.
West?” Haley motions near her eyes. “Attention here, please?”
I wasn’t checking out your curves.” Though now that it’s mentioned…
Go there and I swear to God you’ll have to check ‘other’ when asked if you’re male or female.”
I chuckle and rest my palm against the cool cinder block wall, crowding her. Haley shifts and practically shrinks into the corner. She’s shorter than me, but not by much. I’d say she was afraid, but the way she studies my biceps tells me differently.
Haley?” She refocuses on my face. “Eyes up here please.”
Gaped. Open. Mouth. “Okay, look. Me and you. We’ve got problems.”
I agree. She wants to kiss me. I want her body underneath mine. Nothing a dark room and a bed couldn’t solve. “What are you doing after school?”
What? No. Don’t tell me. I don’t care. Back to problems. Those guys that jumped us on Friday?”
My hand slips off the wall and I straighten. “Yeah?”
They go to school here and I’m not exactly their best friend.”
