Summary from Goodreads:
Warring families. Forbidden love. And danger they can’t escape… Daggers. Roses. Cowboys. Boat Men. Survivors of Earth's Last War, four “families” vie to rule the dreary streets of Rain City through violence and blood. Valencia Hara, Princess of the wealthy Black Roses, is raised in warrior ways with sharpened steel. But she is no ordinary Rose. She is Cursed—tainted with the ability to see seconds into the future… To avenge his father's death, Sebastian Leold, of the rival gang Two Daggers, must face off against the Black Princess, he with his dagger, she with her katana sword. Yet a secret from a shared past leaves him unable to kill beautiful Valencia; nor can she kill him. For they once knew each other beyond their blood feud…and they have more secrets in common than they know. But in a world filled with vengeance and violence, there can be no room for love…
I'm not entirely sure where to place this, it is YA, it is dystopian, it has romance and it has action, it will however definitely be placed in my 4 star reads folder!
Set in the future metropolis of Rain City, the area is split in to four warring factions, two of these factions are truly fighting to the death. You have the Black Roses which have samurai skills and you have the Two Daggers their rivals who are also deadly killers.
The leader of the Two Daggers has been killed at the hands of a Rose, revenge is sweet and the young leaders of the two groups pitch their siblings against one another, Sebastian represents the daggers and his opponent is the Black Princess, Valencia, no mere weak female she is deadly, beautiful and wields her sword like it is an extension of her body, she does have one other ace up her sleeve, she is cursed.
Her curse is that she can see in to the future by a few seconds, just enough time to get one over on her opponent, in the case of Sebastian, they do not want to hurt one another, he helped her years before as a young child when she was set upon and she has not forgotten, he has definitely not forgotten her either and is transfixed by her beauty.
Their fight is interrupted by the arrival of the Watchmen, the local law enforcement, as the groups scatter Valencia and Sebastian find themselves caught and taken for questioning, thankfully they are set free but before they are allowed to leave they have to have a blood test which roots out anybody who is cursed, Valencia knows she is screwed but she didn't bank on Sebastian being the same.
As the book continues you discover how our young Dagger and Rose manage to escape from the Watchmen and how their lives and loyalties change, as the realise each others curses and what they can do with them.
They feel total loyalty for their families but they realise together they can be even stronger and they also realise their feelings for one another, feelings that are totally forbidden.
The Thorn and The Sinking Stone has a slight Blade Runner vibe to its world building, I pictured Rain City as pitch black with the neon lights advertising everything and anything. The story is really good and the warring factions added something a little different. There are quite a few different characters but they all seemed to fit in well.
In a world already filled with YA Dystopia it is hard to find a new interesting read but this has definitely added something fresh!
