The Sunday Post - #7 - 5th July 2015

The Sunday Post is a weekly meme hosted here @ Caffeinated Book Reviewer.

I'm gonna recap my week and give you an idea of what I have coming up plus anything else newsworthy!

Hello everyone! Thanks for visiting on my seventh Sunday Post!

First of all....

Obviously here in Scotland we don't celebrate it but I'm sending warmest hugs for anything you are up to this holiday weekend!

Right next up, what have I done this week, well work and work! Still busy but I am holiday for definite at the end of this week for about ten days, I can't wait!!

The kids finished school on Thursday but before that happened on what has so far been the hottest day of the year I watched my kids end of year celebration in a hall with no air conditioning.

My pair didn't win any awards but I did get to see them along with their classmates from primaries one through to seven sing songs from The Lion King and The Little Mermaid. I did shed a little tear, first of all seeing my babies on stage looking all grown up and secondly because we aren't coming to America, more specifically Walt Disney World as we are being sensible and saving money.

Pah!

In other news, I have been looking more and more at blog templates and have been considering moving to wordpress but I have came across some websites on blogspot with good looking templates.  I may stay where I am but I just don't know.  I want to make a good go at this blog and I want it work seamlessly and of course look pretty.  Anybody who has done the blogspot to wordpress move I'd be glad to hear from you!

I also did a post on what it is like to be a redhead, of course it is mostly awesome but I did discover some rather worrying myths about us! Read about it here!

Oh, I nearly forgot - well what I mean was I am watching Supernatural as I type this and Dean was in the shower, I may have got distracted.  What I wanted to show you was this little cutie!

She is called Eve and she is a Momiji doll, I had never heard of them till the other day but already I want more!!!

You can see the whole cute collection here! My wonderful cousin gave this book loving doll to me as a thank you gift, I love both her and the doll to bits!!! I forgot to mention (sorry Supernatural is still on) she has a little space in her base where you can put a little message, totally cute!

I wanted to ask the question too, where are y'all from?
I love the fact you guys are from all over but I'm nosey and like to know things!!

Have a great week everyone!

I have received physical and e-copies of some fab books this week, thank you to all the publishers for sending them! Let me know if you have read any of them!

Happy Sunday!

  1. You live in Scotland? How did I not know this? (Scotland is my dream place to visit.)

If you are looking for templates (whether for blogger or wordpress) check out etsy. I have seen a lot of wonderful and reasonably priced ones on there.

  2. I've thought about switching too (and may, at some point). Good luck whichever way you go. It is a tough decision in some ways. And I hate being at the schools when the heat is on- ugh. No air is not cool!

    Your new reads look good.

I just read Little Black Lies as well and enjoyed it (so hope you do as well)!

  4. I tried to switch to Wordpress and it was a disaster. If you change your mind about being on their site, they don't let you delete your blog and every time I try to use my email address to comment on other Wordpress blogs, Wordpress blocks me or causes me hassle. Wish I'd never tried to move to them!

  5. Thanks for your 4th of July wishes! :)
I usually cry at end the year celebrations. Little kids signing have that effect on me lol. The only thing worse is Christmas shows. Little kids dressed as santa elves of angels... there I go
I loved your redhead post. I have a few redhead in the family and it reminded me of them :)
Love all your books! I'll start listening to the Passage tomorrow because I saw it here :)
Happy week and happy reading :)

  6. I moved to Wordpress in 2009...and have since added several blogs there...and deleted some, too, so I can't relate to Chuckles' situation...now I no longer have any blogs on Blogger.

As for the blocking he mentioned, you can set up a fake site on Wordpress to make commenting easier.

Good luck with whatever you decide.

Your mention of being in Scotland and not celebrating the Fourth made me think of my eldest son, who has been living in various European countries since 1994...Ireland, Czech Republic, and Germany. He is here visiting now, and yesterday was the first Fourth he celebrated since he became an expatriate...LOL.

I am off to check out your red-headed post...yes, I am a redhead, and I must admit that most of mine is from a bottle, but to be honest, I always had red highlights...LOL.

Enjoy your week, and thanks for visiting my blog.

I'm still weighing up the options with Wordpress, there is so much to decided upon.

  7. YAY for holidays! I hope you enjoy them. And yes, Dean in the shower is distracting. :D

Don't move! Stay with Blogger! WP is so over-rated.

  8. Hi from California!! I would love to go to Disney World one of these days but it is expensive. We are a family of 4 so I'll have to hold off on this trip until I can afford it. But we are planning to go to Disneyland in December, since we can save money by driving.

You received a lot of great books this week. Hunter looks really good. I hope you have a great week and enjoy all your new books!

  9. Oh I love the Momiji doll! I'll have to find out more of those. I hate having to be sensible with money. We've been tossing around the idea of going back to Disney but it's so expensive (and we have the advantage of being able to drive there) so I don't know. I always love seeing my kids interacting with their friends too. It definitely makes me a little teary eyed at times. Have a great week!

  10. Congrats on the kiddos graduation! I'm from Canada and we just so happen to celebrate our countries birthday July 1st! Fireworks and the bbq as per usual!

I've been on blogger since the beginning of my blogging days and TRIED to use Wordpress but I just wasn't liking it. Blogger takes some getting use to if you want to design a good layout. I learned how to use photoshop to design my themes but still I find myself stuck with restrictions blogger has. I'll be interested to know other blogger thoughts on the move between blogger&wordpress - thanks for posing the question!

    1. I've been learning over the last couple of days little tweaks that I can make to blogger, think I may persevere for a little while more. It is really helpful to learn other bloggers opinions on Wordpress.

  11. I like your blog as it is, but understand the push to Wordpress. Have experienced that myself from time to time and have decided nah! I have seen other bloggers on Blogger for years who are still there and I think if they can so can I. For commenting I wonder if you kept your Blogger identity and had a Wordpress one as well, then you could use both for whatever type of blog you comment on. I know I have a Wordpress profile just for that. But not sure if works the other way around.
Heard the UK was having hot temps last week, I guess Scotland would be a little cooler but not by much by the sound of it. Enjoy the school holidays and a break from work.

What every you do with your blog make sure you like it and that you want to come back and blog everyday. I started out on blogger still have my blogger address in case I want to go back, but I did change over to WP. Both are good and I liked them both. Their are pros and cons to each. It just depends on what you want to do with your blog, how you want it to look ,plus how much $$ if any you want to put into it.

Have a great week and happy reading!

  14. Hi Heather,

I moved from blogspot to self-hosted Wordpress earlier this year, April I think it was. Did you mean the self-hosted Wordpress or the free one? To be totally honest, I don't know anything about the free one because I upgraded so sorry if this is all totally useless! I hope it'll be useful.

I used to think blogspot was very versatile, and it is in its own way, but Wordpress has so much more you can do on it. There's a Plugin for nearly everything, and there's LOTS of user guides online for you to browse if *like me* you're a total newbie at website creation besides blogspot lol.

There's even a plugin that redirects users that visit this website to your new Wordpress one so you won't lose viewers. Another that imports all your posts from here to the new one. Content wise you won't lose out or lose your Google ranking.

I think there must be millions of free themes on Wordpress to chose from, variety is the spice of life!

I think my favourite part of Wordpress is you can literally make any aspect of your website your own. If gives you the option to use computer code or use their simpler layout for users who don't use it (like me, lol). The simpler layout is much like we're used to with blogspot.

We can get better statistics. We can see which is our most popular posts! It's more detailed than the blogspot version.

You can set it to automatically share a post to Twitter/Facebook/Google+ when its published - brilliant time saver!

Everything I've thought of Wordpress can do, I prefer it to blogspot, it's like I never knew how confining it was until I used Wordpress! There are easy to understand user guides online for *literally everything* I've searched for.

I hope this helps! :D Good luck with your decision.

But Wow, you should sell it! You make it sounds amazing!!

There is still so much I need to learn about it but thank you for telling me all about it, it does sound so much more versatile than Blogspot.

  15. Sounds like you had a good time with your kids' end of year things, even if it was way too hot.
I love wordpress, but I think it's also because I enjoy being able to add things exactly the way I want them, and I found that hard to do with blogger way back when.

Have a fantastic week and happy reading.

  16. So many things I want to reply to in this post! It's lovely to watch your children grow, but bittersweet too. Enjoy them at every age!

If you decide to go WordPress, I highly recommend checking out Ashley at NozeGraze. She now offers hosting services with tech support, she sells premade themes including one that is very customizable, and she's the developer behind the awesome Ultimate Book Blogger plugin (which only works on self-hosted WordPress.org blogs, not WordPress.com.) I'll be honest - I was so impressed with what UBB could do and what other bloggers said about it, that was one of the big reasons I switched to self-hosted WordPress. I love UBB, and I'm pretty happy with WordPress.

If Ashley had offered hosting when I switched, I would have gone with her. I ended up using GoDaddy as my hosting site (and bought my domain through them, too), but I had Ashley port my blog over from Blogger, because I'm just not that tech-savvy yet. (GoDaddy's tech support has been pretty good, but I suspect Ashley's is better.)

Using WordPress does require some adjustments, and you'll probably want to learn at least a little html and possibly some CSS, but if you are reasonably intelligent (and you obviously are), you can figure out what you need using Google.

I think Chucklesthescot may have tried WordPress.com, the free site, rather than self-hosting. If you selfhost on a site like GoDaddy or through someone like NoseGraze, you can certainly delete your blog.

Other stuff: Your little Momiji doll is adorbs - love the red hair, the glasses, and the book! And I'm trying very hard not to envy you Hunter. My request has been pending for like a month and a half. Can't wait to see what you think of it!

Have a wonderful week, and I hope the temperatures drop to something more normal.

    1. What a reply! Thank you so much!!

I've have been reading lots of info on Ashley's website tonight, there are so many pros and cons. Plus I visited Wordpress.org and had a look through the many plugins, I hadn't realised there are so many t choose from.

The Momiji doll is like a mini me! I think that is why she was bought with that in mind!

      Hope to review Hunter soon!!

      Thanks for stopping by!

  17. That doll is too cute! I'm going to go check them out now. I started out on Wordpress so I'm not sure about the move, but I know there a few people who you can pay to help you out, you might want to check out NozeGraze. WP is good, but I honestly find Blogspot to be easier to maintain and edit the way you want. If you don't self host on WP you're sort of limited as to what you can do.

  18. I get the desire to move to Wordpress. I began on Blogger, and because I didn't know what I was doing, really, I decided to move to WP. I found it easier to customize. However, now that I'm more knowledgeable about templates, I would have stayed with Blogger.

When I originally moved to WP, you got more with your free blog. Nowadays, to get all of the access WP used to give, you have to move to Wordpress.org. That means your blog is no longer free. Blogger gives you more with your account, and the ability to customize that WP.com won't offer.

I've recently switched from WP.com to WP.org just to get what I had with Blogger, and now I pay a fee for it. I almost switched back to Blogger, but I thought moving from WP.com to WP.org would be easier. Not so sure it was. As for the move from Blogger to WP itself, it's pretty easy to do. I guess it just depends on what you want to do with your site. If I knew then what I know now, I would have stayed with Blogger, and bought a custom template.

I'm on Blogger and love it. I'd not move to WP. You can do pretty much all of the same things on a Blogger blog including having a great template/look. 21. I'm from Germany, and I totally feel you on the heat subject. :D Yay for seeing your offspring on stage though. :D I didn't move Reviews and Cake to wordpress, because I just started it there, but I moved another blog from wordpress.com. I don't really use it much, so I can't give you an in depth review of my experience, but the actual moving part was fairly easy, as I just let the hosting company do it (they did one for free). Overall, I really like self-hosted wordpress, but it depends on how much money you want to spend!
