Guest Post and Review - The SW19 Club by Nicola May

Hello and welcome to my stop on the SW19 blog tour!

I love this book and I'm looking forward to sharing my review with you.

Plus I am excited to share a guest post from Nicola!!

Enjoy!!

What would you do if you were told you could never have children?

When Gracie Davies is faced with the tragic news that she is infertile after a miscarriage and her relationship breaks down, she is at an all-time low. With the help of her unorthodox therapist, professor Princeton, her hippie chick sister, Naomi, and her escort friend, Maya, she starts to rebuild her life.

She starts up the SW19 Club, where women can chat openly about the usually unspoken issues of miscarriage, abortion, infertility and IVF.

She is also experiencing a passionate fling with handsome landscape gardener Ed, being pursued by the Hollywood actor father of her nephew, and the persistence of her adulterous ex-partner.

A lot for one woman to cope with.

A day in the life of a writer – by Nicola May

I would love to tell all you lovely Random Redheaded Rambling blog readers that I daily lay on my velvet chaise, being fanned and fed grapes by a scantily clad toy boy whilst reciting my next masterpiece into a Dictaphone.

However, the reality of being a romcom author is sadly not quite so romantic.

No two days are the same but this is my general routine –

0600 – my alarm catapults me into reality. I crawl to the kitchen, make a strong cup of tea (always PG Tips) and get back into bed to catch up on the news on TV and spend a bit of time with my wonderful RSPCA cat Stanley. That’s if he’s not waiting at the door with some form of livestock. He brought me a baby rabbit last week!

0645 - I find exercise really therapeutic, so once I’ve had breakfast, (usually muesli and whatever fruit I have to throw in it) I don exercise gear and head to the local park. Walking is my time to think about plot lines, characters etc. Sometimes I have a mad Eureka moment when I see where a new story can go and it really excites me. Yes, I am that mad woman shouting ‘Yes’ out loud when a new idea forms in my mind!

0745 – I shower, drink more tea and then the laptop is opened. I check my emails, then on to social media to put up as witty or interesting a post on Twitter and Facebook as I can. I try not to get too sidetracked or I would never get any writing done.

1030 - Generally, I aim to start writing around 1030. But, with The SW19 Club launching on July 23rd I’ve been in a whirl of writing blog posts, like this one, and working alongside my publicist to get as many PR opportunities as I can.

When I’m fully focused on writing, the rest of my day just flies. I tend to be relentless, only stopping when my stomach rumbles its disapproval. Occasionally, I have been known to write into the early hours and have previously been known to lose whole weekends.

The one guarantee at the end of the day is that wine is quite often taken!

I had only read the prologue of the SW19 Club and I was in tears, this is a emotional roller coaster ride of  book, you had better strap in!

Gracie Davies had it all, a loving partner, a great job and she is pregnant with twins.  Her life was perfect until the day she lost her babies.

The feeling of loss is immense coupled with the fact she discovers that she can no longer can have children and has to have a hysterectomy.

But even though the pain stays, life goes on.

Feeling she is through the worst of it, Gracie tries to get her life back on track, she tries to reconnect with Lewis, her partner as they have drifted apart. They start to reconnect but Gracie discovers he has been unfaithful and she kicks him in to touch and leaves him as she finds out he was unfaithful with a work friend.

She seeks solace and shelter with her hippy dippy sister Naomi and discovers a kindred spirit in cafe worked Maya. With her sister and new friend she starts to properly kick start her life.

To avoid spoilers (I am always worried about that!) I will give you a quick run through about what the rest of the book has in store for you.

Gracie makes some new friends including the outspoken Maya, they start trying to get fit (fit=drinking and smoking on a park bench whilst yapping!) and finds herself acquainted with a lady who owns a cafe on the park with a room at the back to rent out for functions, she needs Gracie's help to market it.

Gracie jumps at the chance, because at the park works the hunky Ed who might give Gracie a chance to jump back on that saddle.

But, there is always a but, in the background of Gracie's story you are hearing other POV's from characters whose stories weave in and out of Gracie's. You have the therapist, the prostitute, the rapist, the lawyer and they all serve their part in the climax of Gracie's story, which may or may not be a happily ever after.

SW19 is a wonderful tale, it will make you cry and it will make you laugh.  Nicola has written a story close to her own heart and I think she is so incredible for doing so as she has made a story essentially about the pain of miscarriage in to heartfelt, enjoyable read, I loved it!

Thank you to the publisher for providing me with a copy in exchange for an honest review
