First of all yes this is a book about a school of magic, yes there is a dangerous school tournament, yes there is a mysterious forest surrounding the school - It is not Harry Potter, lets just get that out in the open, it is not a Harry Potter clone, there have been countless books about magical schools of witches and wizards over the years, I just wanted to get that out of the way.

Miss Mabel's School for Girls (MMSFG) is the great first book in the Network series, straight away it has a dark and misty atmosphere going as we meet our main character Bianca.

Bianca is seeking entry to MMSFG, she is sixteen and incredibly gifted, she is also incredibly cursed and her future looks bleak, if she does not break the curse she will end up dead.

The witch who cast the curse happens to be the eponymous Miss Mabel, the elusive and famous witch who cursed Bianca's grandmother sealing their fates with an unhappy ending unless Bianca can do something about it.

Luckily she does get in to MMSFG and quickly learns who the mean girls are and who the nice ones are.  She arrives at the school just in time for an important competition, one that is only open to 3rd year students, not 1st years like Bianca.

The prize for winning the competition is becoming assistant to the revered Miss Mabel and Bianca above anything, wants that prize, despite the ban on 1st and 2nd years, Bianca manages to enter the competition along with a 2nd year - can Bianca win, she better as her life depends on it!

I won't say if she does but if she does win she will need to win the respect of Miss Mabel and somehow manage to get that curse removed. It seems an impossible task.

Miss Mabel is a bit of a two faced character, she can seem all sweetness and light but there is a lot of dark there too, she is one not to be trusted and Bianca needs to play it safe.

Bianca was a great character, she was determined and so clever, it was also nice to read a story with no romance in it, just a pure fun read.  She is ably supported by a group of students which of course have all the usual culprits (smart, ditsy, mean...) and a collection of assorted teachers.

I really enjoyed this book, it was the perfect book to let your mind escape in, I'm looking forward to reading the next two books to see how this series carries on.

Thank you to CBB for providing me with a copy in exchange for an honest review
