Urban Fantasy with a Cyberpunk Twist

***first episode of the nine-part serial***

What's your life worth on the open market?

In this gritty urban fantasy, debt collectors take your life energy and give it to someone more "worthy"... all while paying the price with black marks on their souls.

Lirium plays the part of the grim reaper well, with his dark trenchcoat, jackboots, and the black marks on his soul that every debt collector carries. He's just in it for his cut, the ten percent of the life energy he collects before he transfers it on to the high potentials, the people who will make the world a better place with their brains, their work, and their lives. That hit of life energy, a bottle of vodka, and a visit from one of Madam Anastazja's sex workers keep him alive, stable, and mostly sane... until he collects again.

But when his recovery ritual is disrupted by a sex worker who isn't what she seems, he has to choose between doing an illegal hit for a girl whose story has more holes than his soul or facing the bottle alone--a dark pit he's not sure he'll be able to climb out of again.

Delirium is approximately 12,000 words or 48 pages, and is the first of nine episodes in the first season of The Debt Collector serial.

It is recommended that you start with the first season, but each season is a complete story for that debt collector and can serve as an entry point to the series. There are five planned seasons in the Debt Collector series, the first four each from the perspective of a different debt collector with the fifth season bringing all four together.

.

This is a super, quick, thrilling read, which follows debt collector Lirium as he collects. Money is not what he is going after, it is time, more specifically time left to live.

The debtors are very much human and he takes their remaining life and gives it to people who need it, the people who invent cures for illnesses, create new tech, basically make the world a better (and more beautiful) place.

They only get 90% of that life, Lirium does get to keep 10% for himself. It is a dangerous business and even though he looks like the Grim Reaper, Lirium needs to be careful as people have been known to take collectors and the life energy that they keep in them.

Lirium finds himself in a situation when on a low from transferring out life energy he seeks solace in drink and sex, hiring a prostitute all he wants is a little company but he gets a desperate girl who needs his help.

Will he trust her enough to be her saviour or is she hiding something sinister?

Well once I read part 2 I will fill you in!

I get Blade Runner-esque vibes off this story, it feels dark to me, maybe it is just to whole Grim Reaper thing, I don't know - what do you think if you have read it?

Anyway this is a great start to the Debt Collector series of which there are quite a few instalments that I will fill you in with over the coming weeks!

Thanks to All Night Reads for providing me with a copy in exchange for an honest review

  2. Oh I love this series, both season 1 and season 2 are awesome and very well written. I read these episode by episode once they got released, but it must be nice as well to be able to just read the episodes right after each other as well. I would definitely say it's a dark book, mostly a dark world. I like Lirium and how he's a bit of an anti-hero, he's an interesting character. I am looking forward to hear how you enjoy the rest of the series!
