Bizarre Books #43 - Haynes Pensioner Manual

Whilst looking through the hundreds of thousands of books on Amazon I discovered hidden gems, books that maybe have been overshadowed and have not had the credit they deserve.

They may be a bizarre, they may be funny or even unintentionally funny, they may be wonderfully cute or they may just be a total WTF!!! book.

This weekly post is a tribute to these wonderful gems and to be honest some of them are worth looking at for their reviews alone!

Do my American readers have Haynes manuals, the old school ones for every car going?

Hopefully you do, they have some fantastic new manuals that help with other sorts of motors like the kind that kicks your arse out of bed everyday!

Now I'm only 38 but retirement can't come soon enough and the prosect of being a pensioner appeals to me, all the hours I can devote to reading, strolls along the road, baking plus endless cups of tea and watching the Antiques Roadshow.

I can't wait, however retirement age in Britain will probably be about 88 when my turn for the pension comes so I may have a long wait.  This book with its handy tips such as pimping your ride, dealing with shock absorbers and general wear and tear will keep me clued up until that happy day comes when I collect my pension.

What do you plan to do when you retire?

I've been watching #2 - Bob's Burgers

Every day, yes every day you can pretty much guarantee an episode of Bob's Burgers is on in my house, you see it was my thing to watch but no my kids decided they wanted to watch it too and they totally adore it.  Since they are kids they can quite happily watch it over and over and over and over again.

I don't mind a bit, you see I love the Belchers, their Funko Pops grace my bookshelf and as from tomorrow (my youngest daughters birthday) a giant poster will grace a bedroom wall.  They are a family and family life is something I can relate too.

Yes, I know they aren't a typical family, they are all a little bonkers but hey who likes normal these day anyway.  Dealing with crushes boys/girls, bonkers landlords, crazy neighbours, naming burgers and puberty, all in a normal days work for any family!

The voices totally make it, my favourites though have to be Megan Mullaly as Linda Belcher's cat loving sister and the wonderful Kristen Schaal as bunny-ears wearing badass, smartmouth Louise.

The songs too, they do occasionally burst in to song and I believe they have an album coming out soon, such delights as the catchy Diarrhoea are going to be on it, trust me it's catchy (huh, an unintentional pun).

Anyway Bobs Burgers is excellent fun to watch, its funny and doesn't take itself to seriously.  I should know I have watched each episode about ten times so far!!

REVIEW - Eclipse Volume 1 by Zack Kaplan

Title: Eclipse Volume 1

Author: Kaplan, Timpano and Northrop

Publisher:  Image Comics / Top Cow

Release Date: 15th February 2017

Source: Bought own copy Amazon
Imagine if sunlight burned you alive. In the near future, a mysterious solar event has transformed the sun’s light into deadly immolating rays. The world’s few survivors now live in nocturnal cities. But a killer who uses sunlight to burn his victims emerges, and when he targets the daughter of a solar power mogul, it falls to a disillusioned solar engineer to protect her. Collects ECLIPSE #1-4.

I've read dystopians filled with aliens, floods, zombies, nuclear war, asteroids....you get the idea, but I don't think I have read one after a solar event.

I'm sure someone is going to shout at me and say "what about this one?" and to you I say "thanks I'll add to my wish list", anyway I digress, I really enjoyed the latest addition to my graphic novel shelf, Eclipse!

It kinda reminded of WOOL by Hugh Howey, I think it was the suits that they wear going outside during the day and the whole being underground thing but of course the only thing these book have in common is the whole end of the world thing.

Set in NYC, it takes place 10 years after a solar event has burnt most of the world to a crisp, those left behind take shelter underground during the day only venturing out at night, those who find themselves out during the day well the wont survive long without an ice suit.

The premise is an old school murder mystery, a series of badly burned bodies are found, somebody is managing to get outside during the day without getting burnt to get rid of these people and that somebody has a list and on it is the daughter of one of NYC most influential men.

We follow Bax as he tries to get to the bottom of these murders but don't for a minute think this is going to be a straightforward case.

Eclipse not only has a great setting and story line, the art looks good too and really helps emphasise the city of NYC as a place you don't want to end up in during the day!

All in all this shows great promise and hopefully the next volume will be a strong as this one.

BIZARRE BOOKS #42 - How To Make Your Cat An Internet Celebrity

Whilst looking through the hundreds of thousands of books on Amazon I discovered hidden gems, books that maybe have been overshadowed and have not had the credit they deserve.

They may be a bizarre, they may be funny or even unintentionally funny, they may be wonderfully cute or they may just be a total WTF!!! book.

This weekly post is a tribute to these wonderful gems and to be honest some of them are worth looking at for their reviews alone!

Cats - I love 'em!

I love 'em because I don't own one that is scratching up my house, but if I did own one, it would have it's own Instagram account and a shedload of adorable pictures on it of the cat living it up at my expense.

Think Crusoe the Celebrity Dachshund but the better, cooler kitty cat version.

Anyway I think this book will help me if I decide to get a cat and I can tell this works because that cat on the cover looks dead happy!

Could your pet be an internet celebrity?

I've been watching #1 - Stranger Things Season One

So this week I got an email from Netflix offering me another free trial, an offer which I took up and I knew before I had even finishing re-registering what I was going to watch......

I was born in 1978 so my formative years were definitely during the Eighties, so when I heard about a supernatural new tv show that was wonderfully retro with a cool soundtrack, cute kid actors who give some adults a run for their money and the triumphant return of Winona Ryder plus a shed load of on edge moments well I was sold.

Well apart from the fact I didn't have Netflix but the TV on demand gods heard me and you know what I might keep it on past it's month.  Anyway I digress!

I have only watched the first three episodes of this but I am already hooked, the sort of hooked which has me racing to wikipedia to find out about the cast, looking on Amazon for merch and the considering of creating a Pinterest board devoted to it.

In short I love it, it scared the crap out of me after five minutes, it scared the crap out of me about twelve minutes in but my god it is good.

The basis is a group of four best friends, one of them goes missing and the story follows the hunt for the missing boy whose mother is played by Winona, who is perfectly cast as the chain-smoking, slowly unhinging Mom.

I don't want to say too much about it in case you haven't watched it but it is the perfect fusion of retro supernatural horror with a lot of tween/teen angst and 80's theming.  I mean they closed with The Bangles one episode, whats not to love.

So if you are looking for something to watch that is a little bit special, try this.

PODCASTASTIC #3 - Pop Everything

The day that I walked in to Night Vale was the day I fell in love with podcasts.

My phone how ever got pissed off quickly as it liked Angry Birds and that went to the great recycle bin in the cloud to make way for episodes of quirky shows that me, the owner of said phone likes!

Anyway this week I am listening to......

I am a huge fan of the Complete Guide to Everything, in fact at the moment it is the only podcast I listen too, well this one is the exception as it is TCGTE's pop culture spin-off.

Pop Everything is full of the humour that I have come to expect from Tim and Tom plus it has regular guests appearing to lend a hand.

I've only listened to a couple including the one of the Queen of Country, Dolly Parton and a very funny one where Tim and Tom's friend from England gives them some British comedy classics to watch.

The only downside about Pop Everything is that they don't seem to update it very often which is no biggie as I still have TCGTE to listen to but whilst this is still kicking I'd recommend a listen.

Hey! I bought this! #1 - Punky Pins

I am a woman and I like shopping, it was my friends birthday the other week so I used this reason as a thinly vieled excuse to accidentally buy myself something whilst looking for her present.

She loves many things including Tom Hardy and Parks & Rec, this led to me finding some pretty cool sites including Punky Pins where I was sucked in straight away by their cute wares, I made a purchase!

So for this my first post of Hey! I bought this, I bought this!!!!!

I think it is adorable, I am a coffee addict so it really suits me to a tee!  Anyway check them out! I'm eyeing up their Stranger Things pins for my next purchase!

My 3rd Blogging Anniversary

So this time about three years ago I decided to start a food blog, you see several months beforehand I had discovered Pinterest and quickly become obsessed with all the pretty pins especially those food ones.

I started reading the blogs that were attached to the pins and discovered some fantastic sites, at the time I had just been made redundant, job hunting was going badly so I found myself with a lot of time on my hands.

Maybe I could blog too!

I could become a food blogger because how difficult really is it to take a nice picture of a cupcake or a tasty pie.

Holy crap it is hard to take a decent picture, I quickly decided that I was out of my mind if I could be the next Pioneer Woman so decided that the one thing I did know inside and out was books, I like them, I read them, I own them, a lot of them.  Maybe I could talk about them,

So I did.

My first review was Article 5 by Kristen Simmons and as I type this I revisited it for the first time in three years and to me it looks awful but hey it got 44 views! I was happy!

I didn't understand anything about commenting on other blogs, sharing stuff on social media, I really just learnt as I went along, I'm still learning now, blogging is like learning another language.

To begin with I loved blogging, even if nobody was reading it felt good to sit down a just blah out my thoughts, gradually I gained the courage to start popping by other blogs and people started commenting on mine, I felt part of a community.

However a job came my way and my kids got older and my blog started to feel more like a chore than I joy.  Books that I had looked forward to reading I was dreading, I was tired and reading was far down my list never mind blogging.  However I prevailed and managed to muddle through.

Anyway that last bit sounded gloomy. so I will say this blogging is hard and I have huge respect for all bloggers that consistently manage to get post after post out but I really can't compare myself to them, blogging has taught me that we are all different aren't we? It is easy to compare yourself to other bloggers, but don't that is the worst thing you can do, be yourself and be original.

So to save myself from blogging burnout I am embracing scheduling, it will kill me but hell I am an adult I can plan.  It seems to be the way forward and it will help a lot, heck I could be a smart arse and do my 4th anniversary post after this one!

I have also embraced a couple of wonderful sites that are proving great for graphics which I will talk about in posts to come but they have made life easier and prettier looking.

So happy anniversary to this random redhead and if you are thinking of giving up your blog, I'd advise take a break, take a long hard look and take a chance.

Thank you all for supporting me!!

Top Ten Tuesday - Top Ten Books I wish had more / less X in them

Top Ten Tuesday is an original feature/weekly meme created at The Broke and the Bookish.

This feature was created because they love and love to share their lists with other bookish folks!

The topic is - Books that I wish had more or less X in them...

What is X? X = Zombies, because I love zombies make everything ok, well unless you are bitten by one and then it could end very badly...

1  Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen
Well shit I think somebody may have done this already!

2  The Famous Five books by Enid Blyton
Lashings of ginger ale and zombie brains?  Our plucky kids will I'm sure manage to kick zombie butt.

3  Fifty Shades of Grey by EL James
Would definitely have made this over the top sex fest more palatable with a zombie Christian Gray.

4  Miss Marple (any of) by Agatha Christie
Solving murder is all in a days work for our lady sleuth, a pack of zombies shouldn't be a problem.

5  Sherlock Holmes by Arthur Conan Doyle
Like Marple, Sherlock never shies away from a problem, he would I'm sure come up with a clever idea to see off those pesky zombies.

6  The Walking Dead by Robert Kirkman
Does this really need extra zombies on top of the zombies it already has? Yes, yes it does!

7  The Martian by Andy Weir
He thinks he is all alone.......nope here come the undead Martians.

8  WOOL by Hugh Howey
Its already the end of the world so what would be better than throwing some zombies in with the survivors who live within the vast silo?

9  Trainspotting by Irvin Welsh
The sequel to this is out just now at the movies, the original was pretty brutal with them out of their faces on heroin most of the film. How would they cope with the end of the world?

10  Bridget Jones Diary by Helen Fielding
Dear Diary today I smoked 20 cigarettes and killed 15 zombies....

What book would you like more or less X in?
